Two methods exist for removing dents, and they are not interchangeable. The right one depends on the dent's location, size, depth and whether the paint is broken. Choosing wrong means either paying for a result that could have been cheaper, or ending up with a respray that was unavoidable.
Dents on cars in the Algarve come from predictable sources. Narrow village streets in Loulé where wing mirrors pass within centimetres of stone walls. Car park door dings in the supermarket at Almancil where parking bays are sized for a different era of vehicle. Gravel roads near Quinta do Lago where loose stones flick up and dent lower panels. However they arrive, the question is always the same: how does it come out, and what is the right way to do it?
The two main methods are paintless dent removal — PDR — and conventional bodywork repair using filler, primer and paint. They are not two approaches to the same problem. They are appropriate for different types of damage, and using the wrong one creates either unnecessary cost or a worse result than the correct method would have achieved.
PDR works by accessing the dent from behind the panel — through a gap in the door or boot, a removed light cluster, a trim piece pulled back, or a purpose-drilled access hole that is then closed — and using a series of rods and picks to slowly massage the metal back to its original position from the inside. A trained PDR technician does not simply push the metal back: they work the dent incrementally, reducing it in stages and addressing the high points and low points in a specific sequence to prevent the metal from creasing or over-springing. The finish is the original paint, undisturbed. No filler, no primer, no spray gun.
For PDR to be the right method, several conditions need to be met. The paint over the dent must be intact — no chips, no cracks, no flaking at the dent edge. If the paint has broken, PDR can still remove the dent in the metal but cannot address the paint damage, meaning a respray step would be required alongside it anyway. The dent must be accessible from behind: some structural panels, double-skinned doors near the base, or areas blocked by fixed bracing cannot be reached without significant disassembly. The depth and character of the dent matters: a smooth, rounded dent with no sharp crease in the metal is suitable for PDR; a sharp crease means the metal fibres have been stressed beyond the elastic limit and the metal has work-hardened at the crease, making it significantly harder to massage back without marks. And the location on the panel matters: dents near panel edges where the metal is already under tension from being shaped, or dents in pressed character lines, are more technically demanding and the result may not be perfect.
When PDR is appropriate, it is the clearly better choice. It is faster, costs less than a full bodywork repair, preserves the original paint including any age-matching patina or clear coat condition, and leaves no trace of the repair in the panel's structure. From a resale perspective, a panel that was repaired with PDR is indistinguishable from an undamaged panel; a panel that was filled and repainted will show in a paint depth reading and sometimes in the texture under certain lighting.
Filler-and-paint is the right method when the conditions for PDR are not met: the paint is broken, the dent is in an inaccessible location, the crease is too sharp to massage out cleanly, or the damage is more complex than a single dent — torn metal, a folded seam, structural distortion. In these cases, the damaged metal is shaped as closely back to profile as possible, the remaining low areas are filled with body filler to achieve a smooth surface, and the panel is then primed and repainted. When done properly — with the colour correctly mixed and blended into adjacent panels — the result is visually indistinguishable from undamaged original paint. When done poorly, the tell-tale signs appear over time: filler that shrinks slightly and shows its edges through the new paint, or colour that does not quite match in certain light conditions.
There is a third option for very minor surface indentations — the bridge puller or glue-pull technique — which is a lighter form of PDR that does not require panel access. Small suction tabs are glued to the surface of the dent and pulled outward with a slide hammer. This works for shallow, paint-intact dings where the deformation is more surface tension than deep deformation. It does not work for creased or deep dents.
