Existem dois métodos para remover amolgadelas e não são intercambiáveis. O método certo depende da localização, tamanho, profundidade e se a pintura está danificada. Escolher o errado significa pagar por um resultado que poderia ter sido mais barato, ou acabar com uma pintura que era inevitável.
As amolgadelas nos carros no Algarve vêm de fontes previsíveis. Ruas estreitas em Loulé onde os espelhos laterais passam a centímetros de paredes de pedra. Os riscos de porta nos estacionamentos do supermercado em Almancil onde os lugares de estacionamento foram concebidos para uma era diferente de veículos. Estradas de gravilha perto de Quinta do Lago onde pedras soltas voam e amolgam os painéis inferiores. Independentemente de como chegam, a questão é sempre a mesma: como sai, e qual é a forma certa de o fazer?
Os dois métodos principais são a remoção de amolgadelas sem pintura — PDR — e a reparação convencional de carroçaria com massa, primário e pintura. Não são duas abordagens ao mesmo problema. São adequados para diferentes tipos de dano, e usar o errado cria custos desnecessários ou um resultado pior do que o método correcto teria alcançado.
O PDR funciona acedendo à amolgadela por trás do painel — através de uma abertura na porta ou na mala, um conjunto de luzes removido, uma peça de acabamento puxada para trás, ou um orifício de acesso feito propositadamente que é depois fechado — e usando uma série de varões e picks para massajar lentamente o metal de volta à sua posição original a partir de dentro. Um técnico de PDR treinado não empurra simplesmente o metal para trás: trabalha a amolgadela de forma incremental, reduzindo-a em etapas e tratando os pontos altos e baixos numa sequência específica para evitar que o metal esmague ou sobre-ressalte. O acabamento é a pintura original, sem perturbação. Sem massa, sem primário, sem pistola de pintura.
Para o PDR ser o método certo, várias condições precisam de ser satisfeitas. A pintura sobre a amolgadela deve estar intacta — sem lascas, sem fissuras, sem descamação na borda da amolgadela. Se a pintura estiver danificada, o PDR pode ainda remover a amolgadela no metal mas não consegue resolver o dano de pintura, o que significa que uma etapa de pintura seria necessária de qualquer forma. A amolgadela deve ser acessível por trás: alguns painéis estruturais, portas de dupla pele perto da base, ou áreas bloqueadas por reforços fixos não podem ser alcançadas sem desmontagem significativa. A profundidade e carácter da amolgadela importa: uma amolgadela suave e arredondada sem vinco acentuado no metal é adequada para PDR; um vinco acentuado significa que as fibras metálicas foram stressadas para além do limite elástico e o metal endureceu no vinco, tornando-o significativamente mais difícil de massajar de volta sem marcas. E a localização no painel importa: amolgadelas perto das bordas do painel onde o metal já está sob tensão por ser moldado, ou amolgadelas nas linhas de carácter prensadas, são mais tecnicamente exigentes e o resultado pode não ser perfeito.
Quando o PDR é adequado, é claramente a melhor escolha. É mais rápido, custa menos do que uma reparação completa de carroçaria, preserva a pintura original incluindo qualquer pátina correspondente à idade ou estado do verniz, e não deixa rasto da reparação na estrutura do painel. Do ponto de vista da revenda, um painel reparado com PDR é indistinguível de um painel não danificado; um painel que foi preenchido e repintado vai mostrar numa leitura de espessura de pintura e por vezes na textura sob certas condições de iluminação.
Massa e pintura é o método certo quando as condições para PDR não são satisfeitas: a pintura está danificada, a amolgadela está numa localização inacessível, o vinco é demasiado acentuado para ser aliviado limpo, ou o dano é mais complexo do que uma única amolgadela — metal rasgado, uma junta dobrada, distorção estrutural. Nestes casos, o metal danificado é moldado o mais próximo possível do perfil, as áreas baixas restantes são preenchidas com massa de carroçaria para conseguir uma superfície lisa, e o painel é depois primariado e repintado. Quando feito correctamente — com a cor correctamente misturada e misturada nos painéis adjacentes — o resultado é visualmente indistinguível da pintura original não danificada. Quando feito de forma inadequada, os sinais reveladores aparecem ao longo do tempo: massa que encolhe ligeiramente e mostra as suas bordas através da nova pintura, ou cor que não corresponde exactamente em certas condições de luz.
Há uma terceira opção para indentações de superfície muito menores — a técnica de puxador de ponte ou cola de puxar — que é uma forma mais ligeira de PDR que não requer acesso ao painel. Pequenas abas de sucção são coladas à superfície da amolgadela e puxadas para o exterior com um martelo deslizante. Isto funciona para golpes rasas com pintura intacta onde a deformação é mais tensão de superfície do que deformação profunda. Não funciona para amolgadelas com vinco ou profundas.
